The Design Process

rendered planIt doesn’t matter what you call it … garden planning, a yard make-over, or “improving what the former owner (or the builder) left us.” You know it needs to change to become the kind of place you want to call your own – the kind of place you want to return to and live in – year after year.

Because the most successful plans are not created by designers working in an “ivory tower,” our design process is collaborative. We encourage you to play a vital role in the development of the design.

tulipsAfter all, a personal garden should always be an expression of its owner. We can suggest options and create concepts, but in the final analysis, what we create will be a plan in harmony with your ideas, your lifestyle, the parts of your existing landscape you want to keep, the shape of your land, and the architecture of your home. Your values will become essential ingredients in the new design.

Bridge over StreamWe encourage prospective clients to ask themselves a few questions:

        • How do you use your outdoor spaces now?
        • How would you like to use new spaces that we create?
        • Do you have memories of a favorite garden that you might like to reflect in your new garden?

And the list goes on. As we work together, you’ll have a chance to consider several more. It’s a bit like homework, but much more fun because you’re imagining what might be – collecting pictures in your imagination (or in a scrapbook)!

crocusYou can see that developing a design requires an assessment of your priorities and dreams – and your budget. The whole process is not something that will happen “overnight.” We meet with our clients as often as necessary throughout the process to consider options and refine ideas. Since you’ll be enjoying your new garden for many years, you will find that whatever time it takes to develop a Master Plan from initial concepts will be time well spent.
